Portsmouth pupils take on climate change challenge study
TALENTED young scientists from schools across Portsmouth are taking part in a major climate change project launched this week.
Portsmouth Grammar School has become a hub for the Energy Islands scheme set up by Imperial College, London, for gifted year nine students from schools including Priory, Mayfield, King Richard and St Edmund’s.
Each school will become an island in a fictitious world, and will be challenged to develop their energy use through a variety of technologies.
The scheme is designed to encourage pupils to study science, technology, engineering and science at sixth form and beyond.
Pupils will attend weekly clubs at their own schools until March, learning about relevant issues such as carbon capture, hydrogen fuel cells and wind turbines.
Then they will come together at PGS on March 21 for a UN-style energy forum, debating the future of international climate change.
There will be a competition to build the best wind turbine which will be tested in Imperial College’s own wind tunnel brought to PGS on the back of a lorry.
Ben Goad, head of science, said: ‘This is a huge and very exciting project.’
