PRIMARY schoolchildren got stuck into some DIY at a college.

Youngsters at Highbury Primary in Cosham used paints and other materials used in a range of important household jobs at Highbury College’s Northarbour site.

Although they are perhaps too young to be let loose in their own homes, the youngsters enjoyed a taster of everything from decorating to plumbing. The aim was to raise awareness of vocational skills amongst the young.

Stephen Jeffery, who lectures in wall and floor tiling, supervised the children as they painted tiles, which will be displayed at their school.

He said: ‘They enjoyed themselves and tried different things. They got an understanding of what we do here.’

He added: ‘I’d be very proud of what they have made if they were my kids, so it will be great if they can show off their good work.’

Sara Hope, who helped co-ordinate the event, added: ‘It was a positive experience for staff and pupils – the pupils went away buzzing from their experience.’
