MORE than 100 school children from Hayling Island braved the rain to do a mass litter pick.

The pupils, from The Hayling College, Mengham Infant School, Mengham Junior School, gathered at Hayling Park armed with litter pickers, plastic bags, and hi-viz jackets.

They were joined by Havant Borough Council environmental rangers, Councillor Andy Lenaghan and other members of the community. Together they cleared the area of rubbish dumped by members of the public.

Councillor David Collins, who is in charge of environmental issues, said: ‘Litter has an impact on the quality of life for residents. Initiatives like this bring the community together, encourage them to take responsibility for their surroundings and can make a difference in improving the environment.’

The litter pick was organised by Hayling Schools Together which represents all five island schools and works on a number of community projects, including the community climbing wall.
