SCHOOLchildren buried their heads in books ready to compete in an annual literature quiz.

The Solent Children’s Literature Quiz took place at Bridgemary School with seven teams from local schools taking part.

The quiz started in 2008 as part of celebrations for the National Year of Reading.

It’s become so popular amongst school children in the area that it has been made into an annual event.

Janice Goldie is the lead adviser at the Hampshire School Library Service.

She said: ‘There are a lot of events for children who enjoy sport and music but we don’t often get the opportunity for keen readers to come together and enjoy their interest.

‘It’s an opportunity for those who enjoy reading to come together and celebrate their knowledge of reading.’

This year, teams from Bay House School and Sixth Form, Brune Park Community College, Bridgemary School, Cams Hill School, Henry Cort Community College, Swanmore College of Technology and Hamble Community Sports College took part.

Children from Year 7 through to Year 9 were put to the test.

Janice said it is always a popular event with the children.

‘They absolutely loved it,’ she added.

‘It’s amazing what they know. Their knowledge is fantastic.’

A team from Swanmore College were announced as the winners.

They will now go on to compete in the final at Winchester Discovery Centre in March.
