STUDENTS from a boarding school are preparing to celebrate Chinese New Year.

St John’s College in Southsea, which has an international community, will mark the Chinese festivity in several ways. Before the celebrations begin, students will decorate the college dining hall in bright colours with hand-made pieces, before enjoying a Chinese New Year dinner on Wednesday.

Students will enjoy traditional food such as noodles, sweet-and-sour dishes, prawn crackers, vegetables and spare ribs.

A lion dance will continue after half-term on Monday, February 23.

Students will learn about the Chinese Animal Story, which explains why the Chinese have a calendar showing 12 years as well as 12 months – and why this year they will celebrate the Year of the Goat.
