Round-the-world sailor Alex Thomson shared thrilling tales of his adventures with pupils at Alverstoke Junior School in Gosport.
As previously reported in The News, Alex sailed single- handed around the world in the Vendee Globe Race, coming third against a field of international competitors.
Pupils from Alverstoke gave Alex a rousing send-off when he started the race and greeted him on his return to Gosport.
‘They were the loudest people there, they gave fantastic support,’ said Alex.
The sailor shared stories of his adventures in the race including the time during the race that he lost power for four or five weeks.
‘It is important to hear stories of people overcoming hard challenges, not just in sailing but in their lives in general,’ he said.
Pupils got the opportunity to quiz the sailor about the race and he sat down for a school dinner with them.
‘The Solent is one of the best places in the UK to get into sailing,’ said Alex.
‘Sailing is great fun and it develops important life skills. It teaches you independence and team work.’
