STAFF and pupils at Portsmouth Grammar School raised almost £2,000 towards the redevelopment of the New Theatre Royal through a non-uniform day.

The money will boost the Let’s Make it Great campaign to rebuild the back of the theatre, which burnt down in the 1970s.

Headteacher James Priory said: ‘The pupils found it fascinating to discover Portsmouth Grammar School is on the site of the original Theatre Royal. Given how much we enjoy using the New Theatre Royal for productions, it was obvious we should play our part in supporting the new development.’

The theatre is set to be relaunched in 2013.
