School receives £20,000 to build new fitness trail

THOUSANDS of pounds was donated to a school for a new exercise project.

The Southern Co-operative gave Wickham CoE Primary School £20,000 to go towards its new Trim Trail.

The trail is a fitness track for the school field but with challenges to make it more exciting for the children.

Retail business manager in Wickham Pete Wearn went along to the school to hand over the cheque of £20,000.

It was donated as part of The Southern Co-operative’s Community Support Card scheme.

Run by the Wickham store, the project relies on support from the customers as they give their backing to community projects by swiping their community card every time they use the shop.

Maria Ackland, headteacher of Wickham CoE Primary School on Buddens Road, said: ‘Our whole school community is absolutely delighted to have received £20,000 from The Southern Co-operative.

‘It will help provide us with a wonderful new Trim Trail to help us all stay fit and active.

‘Children in our school council have been working with our PTA and the Friends of Wickham CoE Primary School, to design a circular fitness trail for our field which will provide adventure and challenge for children of all ages and abilities.’

She added: ‘In class, our children learn how important physical activity is to our good health and at our school we all love taking part in fitness challenges.

‘We are really excited to be able to turn our dreams into reality with £20,000 raised by the people of our village through The Southern Co-operative’s Community Support Card scheme.

‘We can’t wait to try out our new Trim Trail.’

The school is the third project in Wickham to receive money though the Community Support Card scheme.

Last year, £20,000 was shared between 1st Wickham Scout Group and the Meon Valley Lions Club.

Mr Wearn added: ‘Community support is really strong here in Wickham so this has been another great success for our Community Support Card scheme.

‘We look forward to seeing the trail completed and to continuing our support of the school.’

The Southern Co-operative will be launching another scheme this year.

To apply, fill out an appplication form at the store, based at The Square, in Wickham, by July 6.
