UKELELES, Pompey legend Linvoy Primus and the Olympic torch were good material for a quick turnaround of breaking news at a Southsea school.

Youngsters at Mayville High worked to deadline to create a compelling 30-minute broadcast of national and local news items, as part of last Thursday’s BBC School Report News Day.

Top stories included an exclusive piece on the growing popularity of the ukelele – which is outselling recorders in the city.

Lucy Morris, head of ICT, said: ‘The day was amazing – the pupils were fantastic.

‘Everyone had a good time and worked together well as a team.

‘There was so much excellent material to work with it’s a shame we didn’t have time to fit it all in.’
