SCIENTISTS at the University of Portsmouth left their labs and went ‘busking’ with experiments on the streets.

The team set up in Commercial Road where they put on a show for passers-by - and showed how to insert a kebab skewer into a balloon without bursting it and how pumping air in a bottle filled with marshmallows makes them expand, among other mind-bending scientific tricks.

The event, which formed part of National Science and Engineering Week, was a collaborative effort between the university and the British Science Association’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Branch.

Chairman Timothy Clemson said: ‘We want to engage people with some fun science demos.’

The team were out again in Guildhall Square today.
