THIS summer’s salads will be a treat for primary schoolchildren who have started planting tasty fruits and vegetables in their allotment.

Tomatoes, runner beans, potatoes, carrots, strawberries and more have taken root at Isambard Brunel Juniors in North End, thanks to the hard work of green-fingered Year 5 boys and girls.

Headteacher Iain Gilmour said: ‘The children absolutely love it. Not everybody has a garden – this gives them the chance to plant seeds and watch them grow.

‘It would be brilliant if they could take a carrot or strawberries home this summer and say “I grew this”.’
