A FURTHER education college is officially in the premier league after winning an award for its sports.

South Downs College in Waterlooville is celebrating Sports Leader UK leadership academy status, for its excellent delivery of Sports Leader UK qualifications and nurturing stars of the future.

Michaela Hutchings, of Sports Leaders UK, said: ‘The award recognises South Downs College as a beacon of good practice and a shining example of a centre going the extra mile to support its learners.

‘The staff in the sport department have really embedded the ethos of leadership into their work.’

Aspects of the college that contributed to the accolade include a fully equipped gym and all-weather football pitch with changing rooms, which is currently under way.

Other success stories include student basketball player Chris Scarlett, 18, who has won a sports scholarship in the States, top athletes amongst the staff like karate world champion Dave Galloway, and the selection of 28 college members to volunteer at the Olympic Games this summer.
