The latest stars who really love reading

It's a new year and local youngsters show they still love to turn the page and get lost in books.

Since March 31 last year, The News has pledged to give literacy a boost through our Spread the Word campaign.

We want local children to read more by showing how much fun it is and how successful people like author Terry Pratchett, astronomer Sir Patrick Moore and actress Maureen Lipman started their careers with a love of reading.

Every month we also recognise the next generation of success stories through our Star Readers scheme.

Nominated by their schools, these youngsters have shown the most enthusiasm for or improvement in their reading.

Some of the Star Readers for January have made amazing progress. Sohail Lorabi, 6, has been doing well on the Better Reading programme at Charles Dickens Infant School in Portsmouth, and has made 18 months' progress in 10 weeks.

This month's Star Readers also include Pooja Kaur whose favourite book is Ted in a Red Bed by Phil Roxbee Cox and Stephen Cartwright.

The six-year-old from Devonshire Infant School in Southsea said: 'I like reading and I like the pictures the most. I read a little bit every day at school and at home.'

Pooja takes her place among our roll of honour which includes:

>> Ismaeel Zaman, 11, Miltoncross School.

>> Tyler O'Neill, 13, Mayfield School.
