INSPIRATIONAL foster parents Ian and Norma Shaw have been named students of the year – despite being in their 70s.

The Shaws, of Portchester, both passed their NVQ in child care and were over the moon to discover they’d won the accolade.

They have provided a loving, family environment for vulnerable children for more than 25 years.

They were close to leaving the course after Mr Shaw was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism of the lung halfway through.

But they both had their sights set on completing the course once he recovered following a stint in hospital.

Mrs Shaw, 71, said: ‘It was a lovely surprise. Anyone thinking about becoming a foster carer should think about it. It’s very rewarding.’

The couple are employed by Otterbourne-based care firm Fostering Solutions. Their supervising social worker Val Emery said: ‘Norma and Ian are a credit to Fostering Solutions and absolutely deserve their award.’
