A 20-YEAR-old gas company employee is proving she really is a bright spark after being named apprentice of the year at her college.

Mercedes Ghey, who works as a gas home services engineer for Scottish & Southern Energy, beat 360 other apprentices at Highbury College to scoop the honour.

She said: ‘I have always been into fixing things, even as a child.

‘I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and am pleased that all the hard work I’ve put in over the years has paid off.’

Mercedes visits customers’ homes to install and maintain central heating systems.

Since she joined SSE in 2008, she has studied the theory of her job at Highbury. She is now a fully qualified gas safe engineer with a City & Guilds advanced certificate in domestic gas installation and maintenance.

The college’s executive director Dee John said: ‘This award is highly deserved. Mercedes is totally committed to being expert in her trade and we are very proud of what she has achieved.’
