A JEWELLERY designer from Gosport and a world-renowned space expert are to receive honorary degrees from the University of Portsmouth.

Barbara Tipple and Professor Sir Martin Rees will be presented with their awards along with 5,600 students from the university during the six-day annual graduation ceremony to be held next week.

Ms Tipple, 60, studied fine art at Portsmouth College of Art and sells her work in Mayfair and in Marmion Road, Southsea.

Her accolades include four De Beers Diamonds International Awards and the Goldsmiths’ Craft Council Award.

Sir Martin, 69, is the Astronomer Royal and a former President of the Royal Society.

During a distinguished career, he has made contributions to the understanding of the galaxy and its origins.

Professor John Craven, the university’s vice-chancellor, said: ‘This year both of our honorary graduates have had successful careers.’

‘We look forward to welcoming them at their ceremonies.’

The graduation ceremonies will be held in Portsmouth Guildhall.
