NEW York firefighter Spencer Grant took a trip down memory lane when he returned to his former college to talk to public service students.

The visit to St Vincent College in Gosport was arranged through the principal Di Lloyd who taught Spencer, now 39, when he was an A-level student.

Spencer’s wife Jayne, who also attended the college, treated business and economics students to a talk about her investment banking job with the Bank of Montreal.

Spencer said: ‘We moved to the United States with Jayne’s job. Initially I was to be the house husband, but then Jayne said I needed to find something to do, so I volunteered to join the fire service.’

Spencer, a former Bay House School student, spoke about his work at road accidents, dealing with people who get into trouble on the Hudson River and fighting fires.

He said: ‘Funnily enough fighting fires is what we do least of. A lot of time is spent dealing with false alarms.’

The couple and their two young children are back in the UK for their annual holiday.

Lisa Hyde, public services teacher, said: ‘Spencer’s story was motivational.’
