THE ghost of Christmas past came to life for infants who put on a spectacular Victorian market day.

Non-alcoholic punch, mince pies and Christmas decorations made out of dried fruit and stale bread daubed in glitter were just some of the wonderful gifts on sale at Northern Parade Infants in Hilsea.

Maria Gleed, assistant head, said: ‘The market day was absolutely fantastic – parents and pupils loved it.

‘The children really looked the part and they also treated us to superb carol singing.’

She added: ‘Learning about how the Victorians celebrated Christmas has been a real eye opener for the children – it’s a very different world we live in today!’
