Welcome boost from £1,000 book prize

Coffee shops and books often go hand in hand as drinkers often retreat there for a quiet read with their mochas and cappuccinos.

But Starbucks has forged a stronger link by working in partnership with the National Literacy Trust to support reading and literacy across the UK for the past eight years.

Now local schoolchildren have benefited from that partnership by winning a 1,000 book grant. Parent Natalie Deacon visited Starbucks in Chichester and was delighted when she learned she had won the competition, choosing Southbourne Infant School to receive the prize.

Natalie's son Finlay Bradwell, five, is a pupil at the school. His brother Jake Bradwell, seven, was also a pupil there before moving up to Southbourne Junior School.

Natalie, of Main Road, Southbourne, said: 'We are a reading family and the reading facilities are good at the school. I also help with reading in Jake's Year 1 class.'

Headteacher Rose Gaskin said: 'We are delighted with this voucher. Reading is a priority at the school and the 1,000 will make a difference when we re-stock and supplement our reading material.'

Jonathan Douglas, director of the National Literacy Trust, added: 'Starbucks support and its commitment to changing lives through literacy is significant. We share a common goal to encourage and develop a love of reading in thousands of children each year.'

The book grant scheme was run to coincide with last year's National Year Of Reading campaign which will continue under the guiseof Reading For Life.

The News' Spread The Word literacy campaign will also continue and run on until the end of March in partnership with Hampshire County Council and Portsmouth City Council.

We set ourselves three targets for the year-long campaign. As many as 1,000 children read our campaign book Shapeshifter: Finding The Fox by Ali Sparkes and 1,140 more children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge in county and city in 2008 than the previous year.

We're now working hard to reach our last target – to increase the number of child library members by 3,000.
