Well done to the latest batch of Star Readers!

Readers were given a boost last week with the news that no Hampshire library will be closed, despite the recession.

The number of books being borrowed from libraries has fallen in recent years, but the number of children's books being borrowed has steadily increased in the past three years.

The pleasure of reading among the younger generations is as strong as ever, as The News has discovered.

Since last April we have highlighted those who love to read through our Star Readers scheme.

Every month pupils are put forward by their teachers for special praise, for showing great enthusiasm or improvement in their reading.

The literacy scheme has been running for nearly a year, which makes February's Star Readers the penultimate group to get this recognition.

Among this month's Star Readers is Bryony Curtis from Charles Dickens Infant School in Portsmouth.

In the autumn term the seven-year-old had a reading age of 5.9. But by the spring this had increased to 8.0 through the Better Reading programme.

Also among this month's stars is Jacob Wood from Pad-nell Infant School, Cowplain.

The five-year-old has shown outstanding progress in his reading including the picture book, The Very Lazy Butterfly.

He takes his place on our roll of honour of Star Readers for February:
