YOUNGSTERS celebrated the Queen’s birthday in style with a garden party.

Parents, children and teachers of Padnell Junior, Infant and Pre-School in Cowplain came together yesterday to mark the monarch’s 90th.

Dressed in the colours of the Union flag and with homemade hats, teachers and children had been busy all week in preparation for the event.

Mandy Grayson, head of Padnell Infant School, said: ‘The children have been celebrating British heritage all week.’

She added: ‘They learned about British music, sport and food and even had a traditional menu this week.’

She said: ‘It’s nice that the Queen’s birthday has brought the three schools together and created a community atmosphere.’

Deputy mayor for Havant Gerald Shimbart was in attendance, watching the children displaying their new hats.

Cllr Shimbart said: ‘It was lovely to see all of the children with their hats they have made having fun.

Becky Jackson, a teaching assistant at Padnell Infant School, said: ‘It was nice having everyone celebrating Her
Majesty’s birthday together, it’s been lovely.’

The parents and teachers’ association at the schools helped by holding cake sales and refreshment stalls.

Mrs Grayson, who bravely volunteered to sing the National Anthem in front of all of the parents and children, said: ‘Everyone has been really helpful to make today happen, it’s been great.’

Pupils at Newtown Primary School in Gosport also held a celebration for the Queen, while sailors on board HMS St Albans gathered on the deck to create the figure 90 in tribute to her.
