YOUNGSTERS stepped up and showed off their musical talents at the first night of the Portsmouth Schools Music Festival.

Portsmouth Guildhall played host to the festival which sees young people aged from four to 18 singing and playing musical instruments to a packed audience of parents, family and friends.

The first night saw students from 10 secondary schools taking part including Admiral Lord Nelson, City of Portsmouth Boys School and Springfield School. Bosmere Juniors and Milton Park Primary also took part. The theme was space.

Gareth Howells is the leader of music at Portsmouth College. He conducted the secondary school choir, backed by Portsmouth College students.

He said: ‘It was brilliant. It was lovely and a nice way to kick off the week.

‘It went well and the kids were fantastic.

‘It’s a great opportunity. The kids collaborate with different schools and they get to sing harmoniously in arrangements that they wouldn’t get the chance to do otherwise.’

The festival continues to run until tomorrow.
