MORE people in this area need help to pay their fuel bills than anywhere else in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, according to the latest figures.

The Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) received 2,719 requests from people having difficulty paying their winter bills, with 433 of them – 41 per cent – from Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant and Fareham.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation’s (HIWCF) Surviving Winter campaign aims to raise £100,000 to help older people with fuel bills. So far it has raised £15,000 which has been distributed by the CAB.

CAB development officer Teresa Jamieson said: ‘We’ re very pleased to be working with the Community Foundation to ensure vulnerable older people get some extra help this winter.

‘The older people who have applied already have been extremely grateful and it is making a difference between a cold home and having some heat.’
