Making Waves in The Solent

CONSERVATION of the diverse marine life and habitats of The Solent has been given a major boost.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has backed a partnership between Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Sussex Wildlife Trust by awarding a grant of £412,400 for a new project called Making Waves.

It is hoped a range of activities to help people learn about the wildlife and natural marine habitats of the Solent and Eastern English Channel will foster a greater sense of responsibility.

The three-year scheme coincides with the identification of new Marine Conservation Zones to be unveiled next year.

There will be workshops and exhibitions aimed at involving people of all ages and even inland rural areas in marine conservation.

Environment minister Richard Benyon said: ‘I am always keen that there are as many opportunities as possible for people to learn about wildlife and the marine environment especially along such a unique stretch of England’s coastline.’
