‘We’re ready for the fight’ say campaigners ahead of inquiry

THE future of a green field is to be decided within weeks.

Tomorrow sees the start of a three-day planning inquiry into proposals to build 92 homes in a field off Scratchface Lane, pictured, Bedhampton by Crayfern Homes.

Residents spent years fighting the plan before it was put before Havant Borough Council last year.

After arguments from campaigners against the scheme, the council’s development control committee turned down the application on the basis that the new homes would be so close to the A3M that the area would be too noisy.

Crayfern appealed against the decision and the government’s planning inspector is holding an inquiry at Havant Public Service Plaza (formerly the Civic Offices) from 10am tomorrow.

Jim Graham has been leading the campaign to stop the development.

‘If we were to lose we would be devastated but I don’t think that’s going to happen,’ he said.

‘Although the council’s defence is it is too noisy I will be raising the risk of flooding with the inspector and the fact that we do not believe the roads will be able to cope.

‘Can you imagine what it’s going to be like in small roads like Brooklands and Maylands with huge construction lorries going down them?

‘We are ready for the fight.’

The inquiry will be held in public but only those invited will be allowed to speak.

First day and developers hid behind somebody who might as well be called Mr Sneerwell such was the style of his questions to the witnesses. One thing seems clear and that the people pushing the scheme would rather be dead than live in it.

This site is right on top of the A3M. OK, so the houses can be soundproofed but the gardens can't. Only people who are desperate or mentally challenged would want to live there.
