Work begins on scheme to improve park access

VOLUNTEERS have been getting involved in a project to improve access to a park.

Work has started on a new fence around Sandhill Pond, a wildlife and fishing pool in Alver Valley Country Park, off Cherque Way in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Contractors are also laying a new path which will open up the space and enable access to people of all abilities, including wheelchair users and people with prams.

The Cherque Farm Gateway Project will provide information and way-marking posts as well as improved parking.

It is going ahead thanks to a £16,000 grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust, awarded through the landfill communities fund.

The project, led by Lee-on-the-Solent Residents’ Association, is expected to be complete by next spring.

Currently people from the main part of Lee-on-the-Solent wanting to visit the country park have to climb a bank and cross a ditch to reach it.

Chairman of the residents’ association Richard Mackay said: ‘It is great that this long-planned project has started.’
