Estate memories wanted

IF YOU have vivid memories of times gone by in the area’s biggest housing estate make a date in your diary.

Making Space, a community art centre in Leigh Park, has been awarded a £50,000 grant to document the history of Leigh Park.

There will be several road shows where residents past and present can take along photos, letters and simply reminisce.

The first is at Barncroft Primary School, Park Lane, on March 21 from 3pm to 6pm. Call (023) 9247 2491.

Why re-invent the wheel?... A book was published entitled "Leigh Park- Garden City of the South" by the Leigh Park Community Association in the early 90's. It has lots of early pictures and detailed history of the estate. It is available from libraries if anyone is interested, but it didn't cost £50,000!

Leigh Park deserves to have its 70 year-old history told just like any other part of Havant but for £50K? I recall the history of Havant Town covering two hundred years being written up by a small team of locals. It was called the 'The Making of Havant' ran to five volumes and was published in the early eighties and probably cost less than £500. Well worth reading if you can find a copy.

Wouldn't that £50,000 be better spent trying to make Park Parade look a bit more welcoming? New footpaths and a road layout haven't done anything. Those with memories of "a Leigh Park in the past" are now in their 60's and probably have all the photos indoors already. What about asking some police officers to actually walk about at night as a deterent. That amount would pay for two at least.
