YOUNGSTERS emulated their heroes – whether they were soldiers, suffragettes or family members – to support an extraordinary fundraising drive.

Pupils at Park Community School in Leigh Park came to school dressed as their own personal idols.

For Taylor Hall, 11, the choice was very poignant.

She came dressed as her aunt Janet Hall, 59, who saved her life by pulling her out of the way of an oncoming car when she was crossing the road.

Tragically, several months later Janet, from Leigh Park, died in a car crash.

Taylor said: ‘She saved me from getting crushed by a car when I was crossing the road. She saved my life.’

Taylor was just one of dozens of people dressing up at the school, which decided to have its Heroes Day two days before the big event tomorrow.

Robin Hollington, the father of Royal Marine Richard Hollington who the event is in memory of, visited the school and spoke to pupils about the difference between heroes and celebrities.

He said: ‘If somebody here comes as Spongebob Squarepants, it doesn’t matter, if that’s your hero. It’s about individual’s own heroes – whoever that is.’

He urged people to get on board with the fundraising tomorrow – which is set to raise cash for Help for Heroes by people paying £1 to dress up as their hero.

He said: ‘It’s not too late to join in. Have a think about what makes a hero.’
