THESE wild and stunning hairdos won a Portsmouth school a top award in the annual Rock Challenge contest.

The look of these pupils from Mayfield School, North End, wowed the judges so much that the youngsters walked away with the prize for best hair design. Mayfield is the only city school to reach one of the finals of the senior competition in what organiser Stuart McGregor said was the most competitive event of the week at the Guildhall.

They performed a routine in which they depicted fairy tale villains who lured children into danger.

Stuart said: ‘It was a novel approach to a contemporary problem – internet safety.’

He added: ‘The school really did Portsmouth proud. It was a fine performance.’

But it was not quite good enough to win. That accolade went to The Petersfield School for their adaptation of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas about a Nazi concentration camp.
