WELL-MEANING neighbours alerted the fire services when a smoke alarm went off.

Firefighters from Gosport station were called to St George’s Barracks, in St George’s Walk, in the town centre at 11.20pm on Friday.

The crew had to make their way into the property through an unlocked window as they could not rouse anyone inside.

Once inside they found the property was empty and could not spot a blaze.

They left the property once they had secured the building.
