FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a house fire in Festing Grove, Southsea.

The blaze began just before 5pm today in a four-storey property in Festing Grove, Southsea.

Police closed the road off at both ends while firefighters from Southsea station dealt with the situation.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus entered the property and escorted two people, including a man in his 50s, out to the safety of the street.

They were treated by waiting paramedics for smoke inhalation but did not need to be taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to reports of black smoke issuing from the flat. They confirmed the blaze was out by 6pm but the bedroom was destroyed.
