COLE Porter, Strauss and Holst rang out around a council chamber for the Mayor of Havant’s annual concert.
There were rousing performances at the Mayor of Havant’s show thanks to his invited musicians, the Meridian Winds Concert Band.
The band is based in Southampton but conductor Don Lloyd lives close to the mayor, Councillor Gerald Shimbart, in Waterlooville.
The concert, which was held in Havant’s Public Service Plaza, on Sunday afternoon, was a fundraising event for Cllr Shimbart’s chosen charities.
The afternoon began with a rousing version of the National Anthem followed by an overture from Light Cavalry by Franz Von Suppe.
Then followed powerful, moving pieces which included Broadway hits, classical music and pieces from film scores such as My Fair Lady and The Dambusters.
Cllr Shimbart, who was joined by his councillor wife Elaine, family, friends and colleagues from Havant, said: ‘It was excellent, highly enjoyable.
‘The highlights for me were the xylophone solo and the tuba solo.
‘I don’t know how much we made, I’m sure I will find out next week, but it was a success.
‘Perhaps the weather put a few people off but there was a good turnout.’
The charities which will benefit from the concert are FLASH, the Family Liaison Autism Support Havant, Cancerwise and Smile Support and Care.
