FATHER Christmas officially brought the festive season to Gunwharf Quays when he switched the lights on.

As they came on there was a flurry of fake snow and a fireworks display while Christmas music was played out to the delight of the crowd of thousands.

Ben Thomson, 34, from Southwick, who took his daughter Rhiannon, three, to watch, said: ‘It was good. She’s just getting to understand Christmas now.’

Entertainment was provided by Santa’s elves for the children.

Aisia Howard, 27, from Rowner in Gosport, who took her two-year-old son Leo on Saturday night, said: ‘It was such a good atmosphere.’

Thousands also turned out in Fareham yesterday to see the Christmas lights turned on.
