Film group promotes a love of Dickens

A COMMUNITY film group will screen a movie based on a short story by Charles Dickens in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Film Society will show Scrooge, based on the Victorian novelist’s work A Christmas Carol, at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, on Friday, November 30.

The event kicks off at 7.30pm and Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Councillor Frank Jonas will be the guest of honour.

The film, which was produced in 1951, stars Scottish actor Alastair Sim who plays the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.

The screening coincides with the annual Victorian Festival of Christmas, which is being held at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard between November 30 and December 2.

Dr Christopher Pittard, an expert on Dickens and Victorian culture at the University of Portsmouth, will introduce Scrooge and talk about Dickens and his influence on today’s Christmas celebrations.

Dr Pittard is also a faculty member of the Dickens Project at the University of California, at Santa Cruz, and has spoke about Dickens on international media programmes.

His latest book Purity and Contamination in Late Victorian Detective Fiction (2011) explores the development of Dickens’ work.

Tickets for the event cost £5 and it is free for University of Portsmouth students. Refreshments will also be served. For more information about Portsmouth Film Society visit portsmouthfilmsociety.org.uk
