A PLANE was forced to make an emergency landing last night amid fears of a fire on board.

Fire crews from Portchester and police cars were called to the airport in Eastleigh at 9.17pm after pilots reported spotting smoke in the cockpit.

Crews mobilised to prepare for a major incident with fire engines and several police vehicles called to the scene.

But the plane landed safely and emergency services were turned back when no fire was discovered on board.

There was no comment from the airport.
