A BMW went up in smoke causing damage to a car workshop.

Firefighters were called to Snows BMW on Eastern Road, Portsmouth, at 10pm last night.

The crews from Cosham and Southsea discovered a vehicle on fire in the workshop and smoke had spread throughout the huge building.

It took three hours to get under control but firefighters managed to stop it spreading to the nearby car showroom where top of the range cars totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds are on display.

Southsea crew manager Adam Moseley said: ‘The whole building, including the showroom, was smoke-logged as a result of the fire.

‘The car that was on fire was completely destroyed.’

They managed to clear the smoke by 3am this morning.

The cause of the fire is being investigated but it is not thought to be suspicious.
