AROUND half an acre of the Browndown Ranges were destroyed by a fire last night.
Three fire engines - one from Gosport and two from Fareham - were called at 6pm.
It took more than two hours to control and put out the blaze.
Firefighters were at the scene until 9.30pm to ensure the scene was safe.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Gosport watch manager Glen Stone said: ‘About half an acre was destroyed by the fire.
‘The cause of the fire is unknown, but we ask people to be diligent.
‘Even in this cold weather, the fire was big. If it was the summer then it could easily have been another three acres and three more appliances.’
At the height of the blaze, flames could be seen from Portsmouth and as far as the Isle of Wight.
No one was injured.
