A FIRE broke out in a police cell after an inmate set fire to her mattress.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were called to Portsmouth Central Custody Centre at 3.04am on Saturday to deal with the incident.

The fire was contained to the cell she was being held in and police said no one else was in danger as a result of the incident.

Officers said she would now be questioned in relation to the fire incident, as well as the offence she was originally arrested for.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘Further internal inquiries will be held to find out how a lighter ended up inside the cell, as well as the criminal investigation.’
