OLDER people visited a fire station to have their electric blankets tested ready for winter.

White Watch at Gosport Fire Station in Privett Road, Gosport, hosted the day and gave fire safety advice.

Steve Bint, watch manager, said: ‘No-one wants to have a fire.

‘The more we can do to prevent it, the better it is for the community.’

Trading standards were carrying out the safety checks on the blankets.

Blankets can be damaged when folded up and put in storage over the summer.

Mr Bint added: ‘People should get them checked every year.’

More than 60 people went to the fire station yesterday for advice and for the checks.

Home safety checks were also on offer to people who attended.
