THE fire service that covers Hampshire has climbed the rankings when it comes to an organisation support gay rights.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is now 127 in the Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index – a rise of three places from last year.

The index is the definitive national benchmarking exercise showcasing Britain’s top employers who support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

Chief officer John Bonney, the service’s LGBT diversity champion, said: ‘This steady progress demonstrates our consistent and continued commitment to ensure we create a working environment where our LGBT employees feel confident enough to be themselves.

‘We know employees who are able to be open about their sexual orientation are happier with their employer, feel more supported by their managers and build better relationships with colleagues.
