FIRES which sparked an alert in the countryside had no connection to clearing land for a solar farm, it has been confirmed.

Firefighters went to Belney Lane, near Denmead, after fire spread beyond a barrier at about 9.15pm on Thursday. It was thought workmen were clearing land for a new solar farm. But a spokesman for Southwick Estate said it was controlled burning to make way for new tree planting.
