TEN elderly people were rescued by firefighters after they became trapped in a lift.

The 20-minute ordeal at Semaphore Tower, at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, happened at 11.20am yesterday.

Firefighters worked with on-site engineers to open the doors and free the trapped 10.

Ambulance crews attended but the group were fine.

Eight firefighters and two appliances from Southsea fire station were called to the rescue.
