A COUPLE of pensioners who had been stranded in a lift for nearly an hour have been rescued by firefighters from Portsmouth.

The pair, a man and a woman both in the 70s, became trapped inside the lift, at Tara Court, in Twyford Avenue, Cosham, shortly after 3pm this afternoon following a mechanical failure.

Firefighters from Cosham were alerted to the incident 15 minutes later, at 3.15pm.

A team rushed to the building and gained access into the lift’s motor room.

They then manually wound the lift to the closest floor and freed the trapped pensioners.

Steve Pearce, watch manager at Cosham, said the couple were both fine and added the whole rescue operation had taken just over an hour.
