FIREFIGHTERS across the Portsmouth area are set to go on strike tonight because of a dispute over their pensions.
Crews will walk out of their stations between 6.30pm and 11pm, and again on Monday morning from 6am to 8am.
As previously reported in The News, they’re unhappy about the government’s attitude towards their pay.
Nigel McCullen, chairman of Hampshire Fire Brigades Union, said older employees who could get the sack for failing a fitness test could now end up taking home a pension which is 41 per cent less than if they reached 60.
He said he was unhappy that no firm guarantees had been made for firefighters facing ‘no job and no pension.’
The changes could be rolled out next April.
The union cancelled planned strike two weekends ago because discussions with the government broke down.
