A HOTEL blaze which ruined a couple’s wedding night was probably caused by a rooftop firework display, an investigation has found.

Newlyweds Robert and Alex Ballard, from Gosport, had to flee their wedding reception after a fire tore through the historic Ryde Castle Hotel on the Isle of Wight.

The fire burned for more than 12 hours and destroyed many parts of the historic castle.

Now detailed investigations have revealed the most likely cause was a celebratory firework display on the rooftop that night.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it had worked with hotel owners Greene King to help prevent anything similar from happening again.

A spokesman for Greene King said: ‘We take health and safety very seriously and regularly train our staff on these important procedures.’

Robert, 23, and his bride Alex, 21, spent their wedding night in a nearby bowling alley and a church before returning home in the early hours of the morning on March 17.
