COOKING fumes which drifted through a high rise block of flats caused a major alert.

Firefighters from Gosport and Portsmouth were called to the flats in South Street, Gosport, at 8pm on Friday night.

The fumes triggered a fire alarm and, because it was a block of flats, a number of fire crews were sent to deal with the incident. The aerial ladder was deployed.

But when firefighters arrived and investigated they found it was a false alarm.
