WOMEN in Gosport celebrated International Women’s Day by writing inspirational messages on balloons and letting them fly over the town.

It was the first in a series of events over the next few weeks for women in Gosport to celebrate the event.

Dozens of women released balloons outside Gosport’s Discovery Centre yesterday. The biodegradable balloons each contained wild flower seeds.

Organiser Jacky Charman said: ‘It went really well and the turnout was fantastic.

‘Gosport Borough Council gave all the female staff there a break to come along if they wanted so we’ve had great support.

‘What we’re doing in Gosport is raising awareness of women’s rights and women’s issues. It’s not about women being better than men it’s about being equal.’
