LETTER OF THE DAY: Stunned by price of rail ticket

A former calendar girl has reached a fundraising milestone in her preparation for a Chinese charity challenge.

Lesley Labadie, 44, from Broad Street, appeared as February in the nude calendar by the Girls of Old Portsmouth, and has now she has raised more than 1,000 towards her new target, which will take her slightly further afield.

In October 2011 she will take part in Heart FM's Have A Heart Trek in China to raise money for Children's Hospices UK.

The adventure will take her 10 days to complete, and she must raise more than 3,200 in sponsorship to be assured a place on the trip.

She said: 'People have really opened their hearts and given generously, and not just people I know. I've been amazed by how much even strangers want to get involved and lend a hand.'

Lesley said the journey would be taking her completely outside her comfort zone.

'I'm not known for roughing it and I suspect I'm going to find the basic conditions quite a challenge.

'But it's only 10 days of my life, 10 days I'm very fortunate to have.

'Those very special people at Hospices UK make every seriously ill child's and their parents' days - unfortunately all too often their last days - a little better by assisting in providing at-home care and support.'
