PUB manager Dean Corke described the moment he saw ‘balls falling from the sky’ during a freak hailstorm which covered the ground yesterday.

Mr Corke, who runs The George Inn in Finchdean, was stunned after he saw huge chunks of hail bouncing off the benches outside.

‘I looked out the window to see what was going on,’ Mr Corke said.

‘It was horrendous. It was if there were balls of hail falling out of the sky.

‘One customer told me he had seen snow on the ground in Emsworth.

‘It’s a bit mad really.

‘I was a bit concerned that people who had booked tables would avoid coming out because of it.’

It was a different story in Portsmouth as residents enjoyed sunshine for much of the day, however there was a torrential downpour at lunchtime.

Heavy showers and thunder are expected tomorrow.

Temperatures will reach 51.8F (11C).
