DOZENS of city schools are now providing free school meals to pupils.

Portsmouth City Council said 39 primary schools – a mix of primary and infant schools and schools for children with special educational needs – are offering free meals to all children in reception and years one and two.

In most cases there are three meal choices, but at some schools there are two options.

Cllr Neill Young said: ‘We have worked very hard to ensure that all children in Years R, 1 and 2 in Portsmouth can receive a free school meal from the beginning of term, and that children across the city have access to well-balanced and nutritious meals.

‘All evidence has shown that these kinds of meals lead to healthier, happier and more fulfilled children and to improved attainment.’
